Arizona, also known as “The Grand Canyon State,” celebrates its most iconic feature. In 1912 Arizona became the 48th state admitted to the Union. The word Arizona derives from the Aztec Indian word "arizuma," which means "silver-bearing." Originally from Africa, burros first came to the Southwest by the Spaniards in the 1500s. The term "burro" comes from the Spanish word "borrico," meaning donkey. The donkeys today are direct descendants of the burros used in mining and were later set free when the mining stopped. I have combined antique maps with my version of stippling into my own creative perspectives. The background for this drawing of a wild donkey is on a map of Arizona, which was published in a 1893 Atlas.
