Arizona, also known as “The Grand Canyon State,” celebrates its most iconic feature. In 1912 Arizona became the 48th state admitted to the Union. The word Arizona derives from the Aztec Indian word "arizuma," which means "silver-bearing." The saguaro cactus, to the local Tohono O'Odham people, are not plants, but a different type of humanity, and are viewed as respected members of the Tohono O'Odham Tribe. The saguaro has been associated with the ability to tap into one’s inner wisdom and authority. I have combined antique maps with my version of stippling into my own creative perspectives. The background for this drawing of a saguaro cactus is on an original map of Arizona, published in 1893 from a Rand McNally Atlas.
