Arizona, also known as “The Grand Canyon State,” celebrates its most iconic feature. In 1912 Arizona became the 48th state admitted to the Union. The word Arizona derives from the Aztec Indian word "arizuma," which means "silver-bearing." The mysterious Kokopelli character is found in several Native American cultures, being especially prominent in the Anazasi culture. The figure represents a mischievous trickster or the the spirit of music. Kokopelli is distinguished by its dancing pose, a hunchback and flute. I have combined antique maps with my version of stippling into my own creative perspectives. The background for this drawing of broken pots and Kokopelli is on an original map of Arizona, published in 1888 from a Geo. F. Cram Atlas.
