Arizona Boot & Spur 1883

Pen & Ink on Antique Map

Printed on Back of Card

Arizona, also known as “The Grand Canyon State,” celebrates its most iconic feature. In 1912 Arizona became the 48th state admitted to the Union. The word Arizona derives from the Aztec Indian word "arizuma," which means "silver-bearing."

The vaquero-style boot brought to the Americas from Spain in the 1600s originally inspired the cowboy boot itself. The tall shaft, loose fit and lack of laces were features that helped prevent a cowboy from being dragged. If bucked off a horse his body weight could pull his foot out of the boot while the boot remained stuck in the stirrup. I have combined antique maps with my version of stippling and some colored pencils highlighting into my own creative perspectives. The background for this drawing of Cowboy Boots & Spurs is on an original map of Arizona, published in 1883 from a Rand McNally Atlas.
